The United States Hospital ship "Hope" has begun is mission of mercy in Indonesian waters. At Tanjong Priok, the port for Djakarta, capital of Indonesia, the first patients were taken to the ship by ambulance Oct 22. They were all surgical cases, and the first were operated on Oct 24. More patients went on board the ship late the same day.
American staff on the ship has been augmented by Indonesian nurses and doctors who will receive special training in the treatment of all types of diseases. The 'Hope' project. financed by private subscription in the United States, will operate for seven months in Indonesian waters. Main aim is to offer facilities for special training of doctors and nurses.
Operations on the ship were observed by some two hundred Indonesian doctor and students by means of closed circuit television.
Patients so far taken on board included Indonesian adults and children and one elderly European man. After documentation and being welcomed on board by the staff, patients were quickly moved to war wards. A number were X-rayed soon after arrival, and the mission of mercy was under way.
