  • Description

A youth demanding a million dollar ransom hijacked a Bangladeshi airliner to Calcutta on Wednesday (25 July) and then surrendered without harming any of the forty-seven passengers and crew. Nineteen-year-old Nazrul Islam -- an unemployed Bandladeshi -- threatened to blow up the plane unless he was given the money, but police who searched the airliner after the eleven hour hijack said there was no explosives aboard.

SYNOPSIS: The Fokker Friendship was on an internal flight from Jessore to Dacca when Islam forced the pilot to land in Calcutta. There, local police kept a tight watch on the plane and the airport, which was kept open for normal traffic. During the negotiations for the release of the passengers it turned out that Islam was on his own, when he forced the pilot to land in Calcutta he pretended he had two helpers with him on board.

Islam released three passengers soon after the plane landed. Three more escaped after a fire broke out on board. The rest were released unharmed.
