    FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF THE DIAMONDS-INTERNATIONAL AWARDS, BRITISH JEWELLERS WON MORE AWARDS THIS YEAR THAN THOSE FROM ANY OTHER COUNTRY - AND THERE WERE 362 JEWELLERS FROM 23 COUNTRIES COMPETING.

    SIX OF THE TWENTY-ONE AWARDS PRESENTED THIS MONTH WERE WON BY BRITISH DESIGNERS IN THIS ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION FOR PRECIOUS JEWELLERY. THIS IS THE 13TH YEAR OF THE AWARDS, WHICH HAVE BECOME WIDELY RECOGNISED AS THE "OSCARS" OF THE JEWELLERY TRADE.

    IN THE SPRING OF EACH YEAR AN INTERNATIONAL PANEL OF JUDGES MEETS IN NEW YORK TO EXAMINE THE DESIGNS ENTERED FOR AWARDS. THIS YEAR'S JUDGES WERE PIERRE CARDIN, THE FRENCH FASHION DESIGNER; MISS MARY KRUMING, A FASHION EDITOR OF AMERICA'S VOGUE MAGAZINE; MR. ERIK LASSEN, KEEPER OF THE DANISH MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ART, IN COPENHAGEN, AND MR. ROBERT LINDEMANN A SAN FRANCISCO JEWELLER AND MEMBER OF THE DIAMONDS-INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY.

    THE AWARDS WERE MADE ON THE BASIS OF THE 26 MOST OUTSTANDING DESIGNS ENTERED.

    THE AWARD WINNING DESIGNS INCLUDE EIGHT RINGS, SEVEN BROOCHES, FIVE NECKLACES AND ONE SET OF EARRINGS. THEIR RETAILS PRICES RANGE FROM GBP270 TO GBP17,860.
