  • Description

PENGUINS BROUGHT FROM THE ANTARCTIC IN THE SUPPLY SHIP MAGGA DAN MAY BE THROWN OVERBOARD WHEN THE SHIP LEAVES HOBART, TASMANIA BECAUSE THE AUSTRALIAN HEALTH AUTHORITIES WON'T ALLOW THEM TO BE LANDED ANYWHERE IN AUSTRALIA. THE MAGGA DAN BROUGHT THIRTY-EIGHT ADELIE AND EMPEROR PENGUINS TO HOBART TO BE AIRFREIGHTED FROM THERE TO A DANISH ZOO. A FRENCH ENGINEER - MISS CHRISTINE GILLETT, JUST BACK FROM THE ANTARCTIC HAS BEEN HELPING THE BIRDS KEEP COOL IN HOBART'S WARM WEATHER.

THE PENGUINS AREN'T ALLOWED OFF THE SHIP BECAUSE OF A RISK OF FOWL-PEST DISEASE. NOW ITS BEEN DECIDED TO RADIO THE ZOO IN DENMARK FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS AS SOON AS THE SHIP PUTS TO SEA AGAIN TOMORROW.

MEANWHILE THE PENGUINS ARE PROVING A STAR ATTRACTION IN HOBART.

THE TWENTY-FOUR SMALL ADELIE PENGUINS MAY BE THROWN OVERBOARD IN THE HOPE THAT THEY CAN SWIM THE THOUSAND MILES BACK TO THE ANTARCTIC. BUT THE EMPEROR PENGUINS COULD NOT SWIM THAT FAR. THEY WILL BE KEPT ON BOARD UNTIL RADIO INSTRUCTIONS ARE RECEIVED FROM DENMARK ABOUT WHETHER AN ATTEMPT SHOULD BE MADE TO GET THEM THROUGH THE TROPICS ALIVE.
