Background: In the Chontales District of Nicaragua June 16 VISNEWS filmed rebel prisoners carrying their wounded and being interrogated under the watchful eyes of government troops; and in the capital Managua, victory 'Celebrations' held by General Somosa, chief of the armed forces.
As the revolt spluttered to a close with the surrender of rebel leader Pedro Joaquin Chamorro, General Somoza accused Fidel Castro, Prime Minister of Cuba, of helping to work out the 'cold blooded master plan' for the invasion of Nicaragua.
The victory celebrations were greeted with considerable apathy and only small numbers of people lined the streets. Six hundred marchers from the Women's Auxiliary Force were expected to take part - only 250 turned out. It had been announced that 45 prisoners were to be shown - none materialised. Finally with heavy rain falling the parade ended in a fiasco.
The unrest which started a few weeks ago was fomented by rebels drawn from leading families in the country. It reached a climax when 60 rebels landed by aircraft in the provinces of Chantales and Matagalpa, where the heaviest skirmishes took place. Although there were casualties on both sides, fighting was not waged on any large scale.
