  • Description

In Nigeria, new political are still emerging following the military government's lifting of the ban on political activity in October. A return to civilian rule is scheduled for October 1979. Former President, Dr. Nnamdi azikiwe, gave his support to the Nigerian Peoples' Party (NPP) at their first National Convention in Lagos.

SYNOPSIS: The convention was held in the Tafawa Balewa Square, named in memory of Nigeria's first Prime Minister After independence. Dr. Azikiwe, President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966, was enthusiastically received by NPP supporters.

Dr. Azikiwe has only recently returned to party politics, and the pledged his allegiance to the NPP. In November, a split in the NPP caused its former financier, Alhaji Ibrahim, to leave and start the Great Nigerian Peoples' Party. The rift developed when the NPP could not agree on the desirability of the same person being party chairman and presidential candidates. The presidential candidate could now be Dr. Azikiwe.

Nigeria is in sight of a civilian administration because of the solid foundation laid by the government's four-year timetable for a return to civilian rule. The new constitution calls for an executive President and a two-house federal legislature similar to that of the United States. The NPP is one of many parties likely to register with the Federal Electoral Commission before the deadline of December 18. Party Chairman, Chief Adeniran Ogunsanya, also addressed the convention.

The NPP is one of the most strongly-backed and best-organised parties in Nigeria. If he becomes President at October's elections Dr. Azikiwe will need all his political experience to combat the ethnic and economic problems facing the first civilian government for twelve years.
