  • Description

President Juan Maria Bordaberry on Wednesday swore in a new Cabinet as Uruguay faced its worst political crisis in many years.

One of the major changes was the appointment of Doctor Amando Malt, a member of the ruling faction of the Colorado party, as the new Minister of Defence.

The changes in the Uruguayan Cabinet resulted from a political row over the arrest of a Senator last week by the Army. The Army said Senator Jorge Batlle Ibanez, a member of a rival faction of the Colorado party, had offended military honour in a radio broadcast during which he criticised officers for trying to reopen a case in which he was acquitted of financial impropriety.

The Ministers of Economy, Education and Culture, and Public Works, resigned on Sunday in protest against the arrest...a further eight ministers following suit on Monday.

On Wednesday, Dr. Batlle was still being held in a military prison and the Army said he would be tried by a military court on a charge of slander.
