  • Description

Several hundred Sierra Leone students marched through the centre of their country's capital, Freetown, recently to protest at the assassination last week of Zimbabwe Nationalist leader Herbert Chitepo.

As they marched and sang they waved banners proclaiming their political stance and reaction to Mr. Chitepo's death. The banners read variously: "Imperialist assassins", "Peace comes through the barrel of a gun", "Shame to puppet Ian Smith", "Down with traitor Vorster" and "Africa must be free".

The students' march was orderly and peaceful. They called on the British High Commission, where a protest note was read out accusing Britain of standing idly by while black nationalist leaders -- such as ZANU leader Ndabaningi Sithole -- are arrested. They also called on the United States' Embassy shouted slogans and refused to meet the American Ambassador.

The culmination of their demonstration was the presentation of a memorandum to the Vice Premier and Prime Minister. Mr. Sorie Ibrahim Koroma.

Mr. Koroma told the students he condemned the assassination of the ZANDU leader and urged the students to continue the struggle for the freedom of the African continent.

He added: "Your cause is a just one, therefore we are prepared to fight with you at all times". Mr Koroma said he would pass on the students' memorandum to President Siaka Stevens and the Government.
