Background: Just before dawn this morning a new flagship of the Union Castle Line docked at Southampton.
She's the Royal Mail Hail Ship "PENDENNIS CASTLE" - a luxury liner to join the company's South Africa service on January 1st. Named after the fortress which once guarded Palmouth harbour, she had on board for this trial voyage from the Clyde the Mayor and Mayoress of Palmouth, They were able to enjoy the comforts of the first class lounge - comforts which include a cinema and stage for band shows. For a quiet drink it's the Lido bar if you travel first class or the harlequin bar if yours is a tourist ticket.
Even on a voyage to South Africa you can get tired of the sea. So here for a change is an indoor swimming pool, specially designed to stop you rolling in rough weather.
In the well equipped gymnasium of the Pendennis Castle you can even go horse-riding.
Any passenger who goes through all that will be glad to find the dining saloon, first class.
One of the incidental comforts in this first class cabin is a special slot in the bedside table so that you don't lose that early morning cup of tea.
Passengers in the liner will be encouraged to take an interest in the mechanics of this fine ship, but on the bridge there's a lot of learn.
