  • Description

About 600 Swedish troops arrived in Leopoldville, July 21, to join the United Nations forces, in the task of keeping peace in the trouble Congo Republic. They have been serving with the United Nations detachment in Gaza. Aircraft of the United States were used to take the men to the Congo.

Later the first Russian aircraft landed with Ghanian troops and supplies, for the Congolese. Neither Russia or the United States have any army personnel serving with the Congo/United Nations force, although both countries have small number of men at work unleading supply aircraft in Leopoldville.

In the city conditions are fast returning to normal, shops and hotels are again in business. A number of Ghanian police, who have been moved in to patrol the streets, have so far been well received by the Congolese. One of the greatest needs at present is the re-opening of the health service. All the Belgian doctors have left the country. It is expected that the United Nations will shortly fly in a medical team.
