    AN AGREEMENT ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING INSTITUTE IN GHANA HAS BEEN SIGNED BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT AND THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME. THE PACT, SIGNED ON WEDNESDAY (23 OCT.), WILL PROVIDE APPRENTICESHIP, IN-PLANT TRAINING ACTIVITIES AND TRAINING PROGRAMMES FOR THE INDUSTRIAL AND CLERICAL WORKERS NEEDED FOR THE COUNTY'S FUTURE EXPANSION.

    THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED ON BEHALF OF THE GHANA GOVERNMENT BY MR. S. T. NETTEY, THE COMMISSIONER FOR LABOUR AND SOCIAL WELFARE. MR. MARCEL LATOUR, UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME PRESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE SIGNED FOR THE WORLD BODY, AND MR. DAVID LUSCOMBE, AS LAGOS DIRECTOR, SIGNED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANISATION, WHICH WILL EXECUTE THE AGREEMENT.

    MR. NETTEY TOLD THE CROWD ATTENDING THE CEREMONY THAT THE INDUSTRIAL TRAINING CENTRE WOULD BE RUN JOINTLY BY THE GOVERNMENT AND THE UNITED NATIONS GROUP FOR FOUR YEARS, AFTER WHICH THE WORLD BODY WOULD CEASE TO PARTICIPATE.

    IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THE U.N.D.P. SPECIAL FUND WILL PROVIDE ABOUT GBP323,000 STERLING TOWARDS THE COST OF THE PROJECT, WITH THE GHANA GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTING ABOUT GBP227,000 STERLING.

    THE UNITED NATIONS BODY WILL PROVIDE EXPERTS, EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES, AND WILL ALSO GRANT FELLOWSHIPS FOR TRAINEES. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO HELP GREATLY IN RAISING THE STANDARD OF WORK IN MANY SECTORS OF INDUSTRY.
