    THOUSANDS OF GREEKS AND OVERSEAS VISITORS TODAY (SUNDAY) TOOK PART IN A 'PEACE' MARCH FROM THE ANCIENT BATTLEFIELD OF MARATHON TO THE GREEK CAPITAL ATHENS.

    THE RALLY TURNED OUT TO BE A COMBINATION OF EVENTS - A PROTEST MARCH, A PICNIC AND CARNIVAL, WITH A WEDDING AND TWO CHRISTENINGS ALSO PART OF THE PROCEEDINGS.

    AMONG THE OVERSEAS CONTINGENTS WERE REPRESENTATIVES FROM BRITAIN, EAST AND WEST GERMANY, AUSTRALIA, THE SOVIET UNION, THE UNITED STATES, INDIA AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA.

    POLICE AND SECURITY FORCES WERE ON STANDBY DURING THE MARCH ALONG THE 27 MILE (43 KILOMETRES) ROUTE.

    THE 'PEACE' MARCHES FROM MARATHON TO ATHENS HAVE BECOME AN ANNUAL EVENT. THE FIRST WAS HELD IN 1963, DESPITE A GOVERNMENT BAN. IT WAS MARRED BY STREETS BATTLES AFTER WHICH FIVE HUNDRED PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED.

    THE THREE MARCHES SINCE THEN HAVE BEEN PEACEFUL.

    AMONG THE SLOGANS AT TODAY'S MARCH WERE SOME CALLING FOR AN END TO THE VIETNAM CONFLICT; OTHERS URGING GREECE'S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION; LOCAL BANNERS CRITICISING THE PRESENT POLITICAL STATE OF GREECE; AND BAN-THE-BOMB PLACARDS.
