  • Description

The United Nations' Middle East Envoy, Ambassador Gunnar Jarring, arrived at New York's Kennedy Airport last night (Saturday) to prepare for the resumption of the Arab-Israeli peace talks. He flew in from Moscow, where he is Sweden's Ambassador, and left the airport without making a statement.

Dr. Jarring was appointed by the U.N. Security Council over three years ago to search for a Middle East settlement, but the talks have repeatedly ended in deadlock--and the last time they were suspended was over three months ago. Diplomatic sources now expect the talks to be resumed at U.N. headquarters later this month.

Ambassador Jarring met with U.N. Secretary General U Thant on Sunday and is also expected to be in touch with representatives of Egypt, Jordan and Israel on Monday so as to discuss details of the time and venue for the resumption of the talks before U Thant reports on Middle East developments to the Security Council on Tuesday.

However, since only Jordan's officials negotiator is at present in New York, it is not likely that any decisions will be announced until the return there of both the Egyptian and Israeli Ambassadors to the U.N. next week.
