Background: In Venezuela, the outgoing President, Carlos Andres Perez received a delegation of Sandinista leaders from Nicaragua in Caracas on Monday (22 January). The Sandinistas, named after a Nicaraguan guerrilla leader of the early 20th Century, are dedicated to the overthrow of the government of President Anastasio Somoza.
SYNOPSIS: The Sandinista delegation thanked the President for Venezuela's support in their opposition to the Somoza regime. The Sandinistas have claimed they are about to launch a new offensive with better weapons. Recent clashes with Nicaragua's National Guard have been the most serious since the civil war last September. President Perez, whose foreign policy has emphasised Venezuela's support for democratic movements in Latin America, is likely to continue his opposition to President Somoza even after the new President, Luis Herrera Campins takes office in March. He has promised support for the removal of President Somoza, and the installation of the democratic process in Nicaragua.
