  • Description

SOUTH AFRICA'S FIRST NUCLEAR REACTOR WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) BY DR. VERWOERD, THE REPUBLIC'S PRIME MINISTER. THE REACTOR, NAMED SAFARI ONE, IS HOUSE AT THE ATOMIC RESEARCH CENTRE AT PELINDABA, NEAR PRETORIA.

FOUR HUNDRED GUESTS, INCLUDING SOME OF THE WORLD'S LEADING NUCLEAR SCIENTISTS ATTENDED THE CEREMONY DURING WHICH DR. VERWOERD PLEDGED THE BENEFITS OF SOUTH AFRICA'S NUCLEAR RESEARCH PROGRAMME TO BE AT THE REST OF AFRICA. AMONG THE DISTINGUISHED GUESTS WERE SIR WILLIAM PENNEY, CHAIRMAN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, AND PROFESSOR CARLO SALVETTI, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF ITALY'S NUCLEAR RESEARCH CENTRE AT ISPRA.

DR. VERWOERD'S ADDRESS STRESSED THAT SOUTH AFRICA'S ENTRY INTO THE ATOMIC AGE HAD ONLY PEACEFUL OBJECTIVES WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF NUCLEAR POWER AS THE MAJOR AIM. HE ADDED:
SAFARI ONE WAS DESIGNED JOINTLY BY SOUTH AFRICA'S ATOMIC ENERGY BOARD AND AN AMERICAN COMPANY. IT CAN DEVELOP 20 MEGAWATTS USING ENRICHED URANIUM AND IS COOLED BY WATER. THE REACTOR 'WENT CRITICAL' LAST MARCH AND SINCE THEN HAS BEEN PRODUCING ISOTOPES WHICH, UNTIL NOW, SOUTH AFRICA PREVIOUSLY HAD TO IMPORT FROM THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE. THE COST OF THE REACTOR WAS GBP1,800,000 STERLING.

THE PELINDABA COMPLEX INCLUDES SECTIONS FOR PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL RESEARCH AND NUCLEAR ENGINEERING. THE STAFF NUMBERS 120 SCIENTISTS.

THE INVESTMENT AT PELINDABA IS LIKELY TO REACH ABOUT GBP5,000,000 BY THE END OF 1968 WHEN ADDITIONAL PROJECTS ARE LIKELY TO BE COMPLETED. ONE MAY BE THE FORERUNNER OF A NEW TYPE OF REACTOR WHICH WILL UTILISE THE COUNTRY'S OWN URANIUM RESOURCES. SOUTH AFRICA IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST PRODUCER OF URANIUM, AND THE REPUBLIC WILL PATENT THE DESIGN OF THE NEW REACTOR WHICH USES LIQUID SODIUM INSTEAD OF WATER AS A COOLING AGENT.
