  • Description

VISNEWS filmed Feb 1 in Mexico City's Constitutional Square outside the Presidential Palace, the 450,000-strong protest rally led by Mexico's new President Adolfo Lopez Mateos following Mexico's break in diplomatic relations with Southern neighbour, Guatemala.

The "cold war" between the two livened with the report of border incidents. The rally was the latest development. It was billed as spontaneous but all government workers, members of the ruling party and officials of industrial and farm unions were told to appear.

The dispute broke out a few days before Christmas. Mexico charged Guatemala with strafing Mexican fishing boats. Seven days after Christmas three Mexican fishermen were killed and 14 wounded in an attack by Guatemalan planes.

In his balcony speech, Mateos denied Guatemalan charges that Mexico was massing troops on the border. Then he told the rally his Government was eager to examine ways of resuming diplomatic relations.

Army units were at the rally. Small groups of Army planes flew overhead.
