  • Description

With the arrival of 250 Togolese and Ivory Coast Troops in Zaire on Tuesday (13 June) the formation of an Inter-African force to police and defend troubled Shaba Province nears completion.

SYNOPSIS: One hundred and thirty-six Togolese arrived to join the peace force, lead by Lieutenant Colonel Kongo. they were greeted by the Moroccans who had already settled fifteen hundreds troops around the airport at Lumbumbashi and at a military camp in Pubumbash the Shaba Province capital. In addition to the Togolese and Ivory Coast Troops, a small Gabonese group arrived in Lubumbashi several days earlier and more troops were expected from Senegal and the Central African Empire. Egypt will provide heavy artillery and instructors to train Zairean soldiers in the use of them.

The Moroccans are expected to replace the French legion detachment still in Kolwezi. There are only 150 Legionnaires left. The Moroccan forces appear to be preparing for a protracted stary and will be both policing Shaba and attempting to inject discipline into the poorly-paid Zairean army, which has proved unable to defend Shaba for two successive years. This is the second time within two years that Moroccan troops have been in Zaire. They were called upon fourteen months ago to put down a small rebellion.

One hundred and five Ivory Coast medical personnel also arrived to join the force. Travellers report from Kolwezi that Zairean troops with bayonets fixed, are running a looted, ransacked town where the rule of the gun prevails. The arrival of troops from Senegal and the Central African Empire will complete the main force, which now totals about 2,000 men.
