  • Description

IN THE UNITED STATES THE THIRD SNOWSTORM IN ELEVEN DAYS TO HIT THE CHICAGO AREA LEFT ELEVEN INCHES (28 CM) OF THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF SNOW TO FALL IN THE AREA SINCE JANUARY THE 26TH TO MORE THAN THREE FEET (ONE METRE).

FORECASTERS SAY THAT CHICAGO IS IN FOR A COLD SPELL AND PREDICT THAT THE TEMPERATURE COULD DROP AS LOW AS TEN DEGREES BELOW ZERO. AS THE LATEST STORM MOVED EASTWARDS YESTERDAY (MONDAY) IT CAUSED THE UNUSUAL SIGHT OF SNOW FALLING DURING A THUNDERSTORM OVER NEW YORK CITY.

MOST PEOPLE LIVING IN THE CHICAGO AREA LEFT THEIR CARS AT HOME ON SUNDAY, AND WALKED TO THEIR DESTINATIONS; OR ELSE THEY STAYED AT HOME AND WAITED FOR THE STORM TO CLEAR. TRAINS, BUSES, AND TAXIS WERE RUNNING FAR BEHIND TIME.

SUNDAY'S STORM WAS ACCOMPANIED BY WINDS OF UP TO 50 MILES (80 KM) AN HOUR. THIS CAUSED DRIFTING AND CLOSED MANY ROADS AS QUICKLY AS SHOW PLOUGHS OPENED THEM. IN CHICAGO ALONE, MORE THAN 2,500 WORKERS WERE OUT CLEARING THE SNOW.

ALTHOUGH MANY PEOPLE WERE ASKED TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO GET TO WORK YESTERDAY (MONDAY) THOSE WHO DROVE FOUND THE EXPRESSWAYS RELATIVELY FREE OF THE NEW SNOW.

THE AMOUNT OF SNOW WHICH HAS FALLEN SINCE JANUARY THE 26TH IS MORE THAN THE CHICAGO AVERAGE FOR THE ENTIRE WINTER.
