    PROTEST STRIKES SWEPT ITALY TODAY AS THE PEOPLE OF BATTIPAGLIA BURIED THEIR DEAD IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF ANGER AND TENSION. NEARLY THE ENTIRE 26,000 POPULATION OF BATTIPAGLIA LINED THE STREETS FOR THE FUNERAL OF 26-YEAR-OLD SCHOOLMISTRESS TERESA RICCIARDI AND 19-YEAR-OLD STUDENT CARMINE CITRO, WHO WERE SHOT DEAD IN THE RIOT ON WEDNESDAY (9 APRIL).

    THERE WERE FLOWERS AT THE ROADSIDE WHERE THE BOY DIED AND ON THE BALCONY WHERE MISS RICCIARDI WAS SHOT THROUGH THE HEART AS SHE WATCHED WEDNESDAY'S VIOLENT DEMONSTRATION. THE TWO VICTIMS WERE CARRIED IN PROCESSION BY HORSE-DRAWN HEARSE, THE STUDENT IN A BLACK CARRIAGE AND THE GIRL IN A WHITE ONE.

    IN THE RIOTS, WHICH STARTED AS A PROTEST DEMONSTRATION AGAINST LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT, 200 PEOPLE WERE HURT AND SOME 200 VEHICLES WRECKED. THE RIOTERS SET FIRE TO THE TOWN HALL, THE POLICE HEADQUARTERS AND THE CENTRAL STATION.

    THERE WERE MORE RIOTS YESTERDAY AND AGAIN TODAY, THE LATEST IN PROTEST AT PRESS REPORTS OF LOOTING DURING THE EARLIER TROUBLE. ON WEDNESDAY 2,000 POLICE WERE ORDERED INTO THE TOWN, BUT WERE WITHDRAWN AT DAWN ON THURSDAY, LEAVING ABOUT 300 POLICE AND CARABINEER TO PATROL THE TOWN IN SMALL GROUPS. THEY KEPT OUT OF SIGHT DURING THE FUNERAL TODAY.

    MEANWHILE THE UNREST HAS SPREAD TO OTHER PARTS OF ITALY AND TODAY MILLIONS OF WORKERS JOINED A THREE-HOUR NATIONAL STRIKE CALLED BY THE COUNTRY'S THREE MAJOR UNIONS IN SYMPATHY WITH THE BATTIPAGLIA DEMONSTRATORS. THE COALITION GOVERNMENT FACES A MAJOR CRISIS WHEN PARLIAMENT REOPENS ON TUESDAY (15 APRIL).

    DESPITE GOVERNMENT AID SCHEMES UNEMPLOYMENT IS HIGH IN BATTIPAGLIA AS IN OTHER PARTS OF SOUTHERN ITALY. THE RIOTS WERE SPARKED OFF BY THE CLOSURE OF THE TOWN'S STATE-OWNED TOBACCO FACTORY, WHICH EMPLOYED 600 PEOPLE.

    THERE IS CONTROVERSY TOO OVER WHO FIRED THE SHOTS THAT KILLED THE TWO YOUNG PEOPLE. THE POLICE HAVE DENIED OPENING FIRE, BUT THE INCIDENT HAS LED TO RENEWED DEMANDS THAT THEY SHOULD BE DISARMED.
