    FRANCE'S TOP LITERARY PRIZE - THE PRIX GONCOURT - WAS TODAY (MONDAY) AWARDED TO 45-YEAR-OLD BERNARD CLAVEL FOR HIS NOVEL "THE FRUITS OF WINTER". THE PRIX GONCOURT, AWARDED ANNUALLY BY A TEN-MAN, ALL-MALE JURY, IS WORTH ONLY 50 FRANCS (ABOUT FOUR POUNDS STERLING), BUT IT VIRTUALLY GUARANTEES SALES OF AT LEAST 150,000 COPIES TO THE WINNER.

    THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PRIX GONCOURT JURY, M. PHILIPPE HERIAT, ANNOUNCED CLAVEL'S SUCCESS BEFORE A LARGE AUDIENCE OF JOURNALISTS IN A PARIS RESTAURANT.

    CLAVEL, WHO STARTED LIFE AS A PASTRYCOOK, HAD HIS FIRST NOVEL PUBLISHED IN 1956. HE WAS AWARDED THE GRAND PRIX LITERAIRE DE LA VILLE DE PARIS EARLIER THIS MONTH FOR HIS WORKS AS A WHOLE SINCE THEN. "THE FRUITS OF WINTER" IS THE FOURTH AND LAST NOVEL OF A CYCLE BEGUN IN 1962.

    CLAVEL HAS NOW PUBLISHED NINE NOVELS, A LIFE OF GAUGUIN AND SEVERAL SHORT STORIES. TWO OF HIS NOVELS HAVE BEEN MADE INTO FILMS.
