CHINAMANO: "(indistinct) Well as far as Nkomo is concerned there is no change on his part. He feels that talks with Mr Smith here, as again talks that involve Britain are a waste of time. And he has not made up his mind, in fact he will not come back home."



REPORTER: "Does he share Dr Kaunda's view that the Anglo-American proposals are dead and that he will take no further part in them?"



CHINAMANO: "Well Dr Kaunda is merely stating a fact. The Anglo-American proposals were sponsored by Britain and when Mr Smith decided too embark on an internal settlement, Dr Owen gave them a muted blessing. This indicates to everybody that he, the author of those proposals no longer has faith in them, and not Dr Kaunda."



REPORTER: "Is it Mr Nkomo's opinion that there can be a solution to the Rhodesian problem now only through the continuation of war?"



CHINAMANO: "Mr Nkomo feels that in the past he has been determined to negotiate a settlement and this is still his view-point, but all the gates have been closed -- not by Mr Nkomo will not sit back and watch the situation drift from worse to worse."



REPORTER: "But why not come back now that one-man-one-vote is being offered?"



CHINAMANO: "One-man one-vote is not an issue. The issue is the entire liberation of this country without anyone around to manipulate the so-called one-man one-vote issue."

Background: In Rhodesia the externally based Patriotic Front -- the political spearhead of the guerilla forces led by Mr Joshua Nkomo and Mr Robert Mugabe -- has spurned the internal settlement talks which are due to start this week. Speaking on behalf of Mr Nkomo, Mr Josiah Chinamano said in Salisbury on Tuesday (6 December) that talks with Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith, were a waste of time.

SYNOPSIS: A large crowd greeted Mr Chinamano when he arrived at Salisbury airport. He was returning from Zambia and London, where he had been taking part in meetings with Joshua Nkomo.
