  • Description

Bermuda begins the year long celebration of its three hundred-fiftieth anniversary with a colourful pageant as the Governor, Lt.-Gen. Sir John Woodall, reviews a parade. It was in 1609 that British seafarers, bound for Jamestown, Virginia, were shipwrecked here: They settled in the up-to-then uninhabited island, which has been linked to the British crown ever since. Queen Elizabeth's message, announcing that Prince Phillip will join the birthday festivities in April, is read to a cheering throng. At the same time, public buildings reconstructed to recall earlier days, are opened to the public.

The entire British Commonwealth shares in Bermuda's year of rejoicing as Sir John is presented with the first of the 350th Anniversary Commemorative crown pieces and prayers are said for the crown colony's future prosperity.
