  • Description

A Turkish Airway's DC-10 crashed and burned 30 miles north of Paris on Sunday (March 3) killing 347 passengers and crew in the world's worst ever air disaster.

There were no survivors. More than two hundred of the victims were British. A large number of French nationals were killed and at least forty-six Turks were amongst the dead.

So far the cause of the catastrophe has not been determined although there was speculation in London and Ankara that the aircraft may have been sabotaged.

The high death rate more than doubled the previous record tolls in an aircraft disaster. Near Moscow 176 people died in an air crash in 1972 and the same number died in a Nigerian air disaster early in 1973.

Many of the British dead were transferred to the flight when a number of scheduled British Airways flights were cancelled because of a strike in London.

In Turkey many restaurants and nightclubs closed after news of the disaster was heard. Most radio and television programmes were cancelled and replaced with sombre music. The Turkish Cabinet, after a three hour meeting, expressed its regrets and sorrow to relatives of the dead.
