  • Description

Australian Solicitor General, Robert Ellicott, accused France of carrying out nuclear bomb tests in the South Pacific for selfish and limited purposes. Mr. Ellicott was speaking in The Hague on Tuesday (22 May), the second day of the International Court of Justice hearing of arguments against French nuclear tests in the Pacific. Australia and New Zealand are presenting cases to stop the blasts on the French island of Mururoa Atoll.

France is ignoring the case in which New Zealand and Australia are asking for an interim order halting the planned programme of French Atomic explosions. The French contend the court is not competent to deal with a matter concerning national defence interests and have indicated they will take no notice of the court's decision.
