  • Description

America's two newest astronauts, Colonels James McDivitt and Edward White, were yesterday (Monday) given the biggest civic welcome in the history of Chicago. The space twins were feted to a confetti and streamer blizzard as they drove from the city's airport to City Hall to be made honorary citizens of the mid-western metropolis.

The Chicago welcome was the first full-scale big-city welcome to the men who made space history last week during their four-day orbiting mission in their Gemini Four capsule.

Crowds estimated at more than one-million strong lined the route of the cavalcade. And according to city officials it was the biggest turn-out since Queen Elizabeth visited Chicago a few years ago.

The astronauts and their wives had flown to Chicago from the Space Flight Centre at Houston, in Texas, and were greeted by President Humphrey. He bought the astronauts the personal greetings of President Johnson, who ordered that McDivitt and White be promoted from Major to Lieutenant-Colonel last Friday.

The climax to the ceremony came at City Hall where both men were made honorary citizens of Chicago.Commenting on the welcome, Colonel White said, as he accepted the keys of the city, 'I felt like cheering myself'.
