SYNOPSIS: The wilderness of the Dead area, and the almost impenetrable desert fortress build by King Herod two thousand years ago. Now a cable car brings visitors up the steep slopes -- last Monday the Foreign Minister of Costa Rica, Senor Gonzalo Facio, was taken around Massada. It was here in the year 70 that 960 Jews, the last group to held out against the Roman army, committed mass suicide. Senor Facio told his guides that he hoped such a thing would never happen again to Israelis. This fortress, excavated in the early sixties, has become a symbol of resistance and strength to young Israel Part of the education of every Israeli child is a visit to Massada.
Senor Facio later swam in the Dead Sea, where the salt is so thick that tourists lie in the water reading their papers. He is in Israel attending an international conference on urbanisation in developing countries.
