The VIIth Plenary Session of the Control Committee of the Polish United Workers Party has elected Edward Gierek I Secretary. Comrade Gierek is a politician who began his revolutionary activity before world war II. He worked then with Polish minors in France and Belgium. For 18 years he worked as a minor in a colliery. He was born in Upper Silesia and here for 13 years he stood at the head of the party organisation of the Katowice Voivodship, There are many links connecting Edward Gierek with the traditions of fights for a Polish Silesia. He participated in the ceremony of hissing the banner on the ship "Upper Silesia". Since 16 years he is member of the Politbureau. He presided over the first day of debates of the Vth Party Congress. As the I Secretary of the Silesian Party Committee he was known and respected not only by minors. Here he is delivering a speech at the foot of the monument of insurgents on St. Anne's Mountain. Having the education of a mining engineer he always paid considerable attention to the introduction of new technique to Polish mines. His election on the post of the I Secretary is of great importance for the future of our country.
