Background: Newcastle United scored a resounding victory over Tettenham Hotspur by two goals to nil in their First Division match on Saturday (27 October).
The London team played some first-class soccer, but the persistence and discipline of Newcastle won through to bring them deserved victory.
It was a match of sudden break-aways and long paces which see-sawed the action from one goalmouth to the other.
Spurs goalkeeper, Barry Danies produced a spectacular save in the third minute from the head of Newcastle centre-half Howard. Soon afterwards Spurs came up with a breathtaking goal effort. McGrath, who replaced the injured Chivers, broke well from a through pass in mid-field and made a sparkling run to finish by shooting inches wide with Newcastle 'keeper McFaul scrambling along his line.
At half-time there was no score.
Five minutes after the restart Gilzean squandered a scoring chance by sweeping a good pass from Pratt over the bar. There were squandered chances galore before Newcastle eventually went ahead after 62 minutes through Barrowclough. Newcastle scored again soon after to make the final result Spurs nil, Newcastle two.
