    THE WOMEN CAME FROM 25 COUNTRIES IN AFRICA, ASIA AND LATIN AMERICA TO ATTEND THE 19 DAY INTERNATIONAL LEADERS SEMINAR ON THE ERADICATION OF ILLITERACY AMONG WOMEN. AMONG THE TOPICS SCHEDULED FOR DISCUSSION WERE COMMUNITY EFFORTS IN THE WAR AGAINST IGNORANCE, RECRUITING OF PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS AS WELL AS VOLUNTEERS, AND THEIR TRAINING FOR THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF ADULT CLASSES. OTHER POINTS INCLUDED THE USE OF RADIO, TELEVISION AND PRESS IN THE CAMPAIGN, AND THE PUBLICATION OF EASY-TO-READ LITERATURE FOR ADULTS WHO HAVE JUST LEARNED TO READ.

    AMONG THOSE LISTED TO ATTEND THE SEMINAR WERE SUCH PROMINENT WOMEN AS MADAME NIVODENE GRUNITZKY, WIFE OF THE PRESIDENT OF TOGO, AND MADAME EMILIE SENGHOR, NIECE OF THE PRESIDENT OF SENEGAL. OTHER WOMEN WHO CAME TO HAIFA WERE THOSE WHO HAVE DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO THE ILLITERACY PROBLEM SUCH AS MRS HECHMAT YOUSSEFI FROM IRAN; MRS KUSUMA RAJARATNA OF CEYLON, AND MRS PANDIT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BOMBAY, INDIA.

    THE COUNTRIES EXPECTED FROM THE LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES INCLUDED MRS ESTHER BONITO DE HOLGUIN, FORMER MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT IN COLUMBIA, MRS PORTALATIN SOSA, FORMER MINISTER OF EDUCATION IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC; PROFESSOR DE PIVEL DEVOTO, A LECTURER IN HISTORY AND WIFE OF THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION IN URUGUAY; MRS LIA OCAMPO, A HEADMISTRESS FROM ARGENTINE; MRS MARIA EDI DE CHONCHOL, A SOCIOLOGIST FROM CHILE, AND MRS CINIRA MIRANDA DE MENEZES, A PSYCHOLOGIST FROM BRAZIL.
