    FRANCOIS TOMBALBAYE WAS RE-ELECTED FOR A SECOND SEVEN YEAR TERM AS PRESIDENT OF CHAD AFTER THE GENERAL ELECTION THERE ON SUNDAY 15 JUNE.

    TOMBALBAYE HAS BEEN PRESIDENT OF CHAD SINCE THIS CENTRAL AFRICAN STATE GAINED INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE IN 1960. IN SUNDAY'S ELECTION, HE WAS THE ONLY CANDIDATE-PUT FORWARD BY THE CHAD PROGRESSIVE PARTY, OF WHICH HE IS SECRETARY-GENERAL.

    VOTING, ACCORDING TO LOCAL REPORTS, WAS CALM AND DISCIPLINED. PRESIDENT TOMBALBAYE HIMSELF CAST HIS VOTE AT POLLING STATION 49-THE TOWN HALL AT FORT-LAMY, THE CHAD CAPITAL.

    WHEN THE RESULTS WERE ANNOUNCED, 93 PER CENT OF THE ELECTORATE OF 1,597,667 CAST THEIR VOTE FOR TOMBALBAYE. THE OTHERS ABSTAINED OR THEIR VOTES WERE INVALID.

    THE 51-YEAR-OLD PRESIDENT RECEIVED MESSAGES OF CONGRATULATION FROM A NUMBER OF AFRICAN LEADERS, INCLUDING PRESIDENT MOBUTU OF CONGO-KINSHASA, WHICH IS A PARTNER WITH CHAD IN A UNION OF CENTRAL AFRICAN STATES.
