In India, 15 million people i the State of West Bengal are either starving or living on one meal a day. The State has been badly hit by floods and drought, and poor harvests have forced the State Government to cut the rice ration, sending black-market prices soaring far beyond the means of the average housewife.
Faced by this desperate situation, 10,000 Calcutta housewives staged a protest march through the streets of the city on Thursday (19th September). As they marched towards the Governor's residence the women waved banners and shouted slogans appealing for an end to food hoarding and demanding a fair distribution of foodstuffs and essential commodities.
A police cordon halted the housewives' march before they could reach the residence of the Acting Governor, Mr. Justice Sankar Prasad Mitra, but five women were allowed through the cordon to present a petition to him.
