West Germany -- one of the strong favorites for the World Cup -- shrugged off the aggressive tactics of Chile to win their opening Group One match in West Berlin on Friday (14 June).

The score of 1-0 gave little indication of the superiority of a sleek, creative West German side that looked fully equipped to carry off the World Cup for the second time in 20 years.

Paul Breitner scored for West Germany in the 15th minute -- the first goal of the 1974 World Cup finals -- with a flashing 35-yard (metre) drive into the top left hand corner of the chilean net, past goalkeeper Vallejos.

But perhaps the most memorable aspect of the game was the merciless tackling of the Chileans. This reached rock bottom 22 minutes form the end of the match when Carlos Caszley, whose name was already in Turkish referee Dogan Babacan's book, was ordered off the pitch after a brutal tackle on Berti Vogts. Caszley sythed the West German fullback to the ground with a flying thigh-high lunge.

The incident brought the rage of the 83,000 crowd to a fever pitch. Chileans Reynoso and Garcia, had already been booked by referee Babacan.

The Chilean team was heckled throughout the match by a group of demonstrators assembled at one end of the Olympic stadium. The demonstrators chanted slogans and jeered at the Chileans as well as waving banners reading "Death to Fascism" and "Chile si, Junta no."
Match officials appealed to the crowd over loudspeakers not to provoke the Chileans. There was no violence, and no direct action by the police.
