  • Description

Neil Armstrong and David Scott, the Gemini Eight astronauts, achieved the first docking in space on Wednesday (16 March), when they manauvered Gemini Eight into a docking adaptor mounted at one end of an Agena target vehicle. However, they ran into trouble shortly afterwards and the flight had to had to be terminated.

Command Pilot Armstrong, a civilian, piloted his Gemini Eight through the delicate manoeuvres required to place it in the same orbit as the Agena and directly ahead of it. Then he steered it into the collar on the forward end, and the two vehicles were clamped together.

At a few minutes before 6 p.m., eastern standard time, the control at Hawaii told the astronauts to go ahead and try docking. They did, completing the docking at about 6:15 p.m..
Control asked if they had docked. There was a faint reply from space indicating they had. There was relieved laughter and a hearty "Roger" from the ground.
