  • Description

MALAYSIA IS BUILDING A NEW ROAD ACROSS THE COUNTRY WHERE THE ROADWORKERS FACE THE DAILY THREAT OF AMBUSH BY COMMUNIST TERRORISTS.

THE ROAD, LINKING THE EAST AND WEST COASTS OF WEST MALAYSIA, CUTS THROUGH THICK JUNGLE ALONG THE THAI BORDER WHERE GUERILLAS HAVE BEEN ACTIVE LATELY.

SO FAR THE ROADWORKERS HAVE BEEN LEFT TO DO THEIR JOB IN PEACE, BUT THE SECURITY FORCES ARE TAKING NO CHANCES. ARMOURED CARS GIVE THEM PROTECTION IN CO-ORDINATION WITH GENERAL SECURITY PATROLS IN THE AREA.

ALTHOUGH ONLY 60 MILES (96 KILOMETRES) LONG, THE ROAD ACROSS THIS NARROW NECK OF THE MALAYSIAN PENINSULA IS EXPECTED TO TAKE THREE YEARS TO COMPLETE - AN INDICATION OF THE TOUGH TERRAIN AND DENSE JUNGLE.

THE ROAD WILL COST ABOUT 17 MILLION POUNDS STERLING (70 MILLION DOLLARS.) MALAYSIAN OFFICIALS - AS WELL AS THE ARMED FORCES - HOPE IT WILL PROVE ITS VALUE NOT ONLY BY IMPROVING COMMUNICATIONS BUT ALSO BY STIFLING THE RECENT RESURGENCE OF COMMUNIST ACTIVITY IN THE REGION.
