  • Description

GOVERNMENT AND AMERICAN TROOPS IN SOUTH VIETNAM, IN A MAJOR BID TO FRUSTRATE VIET CONG PLANS TO SABOTAGE THE COMING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, ARE CONDUCTING A SYSTEMATIC SEARCH AND DESTROY OPERATION IN MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

NEAR DUC PHO IN QUANG NGAI PROVINCE - A VIET CONG STRONGHOLD IN THE NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON - A UNIT OF AMERICAN TROOPS STORMED INTO AN ENEMY HIDEOUT AND KILLED TEN SUSPECTED VIET CONG AND CAPTURED TWELVE OTHERS.

THE AMERICANS FOUND THE ENEMY ATTEMPTING TO HIDE IN HOLES, TUNNELS AND CAVES. THEY POUNDED THE HIDEOUTS WITH AUTOMATIC WEAPON FIRE, FORCING THE VIET CONG TO EMERGE FROM THE HIDING PLACES. THEY THEN BLASTED SIX TUNNELS AND SPIDER HOLES, SPACED A FEW HUNDRED YARDS FROM ONE ANOTHER.

FLYING OVERHEAD, A LIGHT OBSERVATION HELICOPTER WITH M-60 MACHINE GUNS KILLED EIGHT MORE VIET CONG AS THEY ATTEMPTED TO FLEE FROM THE ADVANCING AMERICANS.

AN AMERICAN SPOKESMAN SAID THAT TWO OF THEIR MEN WERE SLIGHTLY WOUNDED DURING THE ENCOUNTER.

THE TOTAL NUMBER OF VIET CONG KILLED ON THE DAY (AUGUST 23) WAS FIFTY FIVE, RESULTING FROM SKIRMISHES WITH OTHER VIET CONG GROUPS IN THE COUNTRY.

IN THE DUC PHO INCIDENT, FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN WERE FOUND LIVING IN CAVES WITH ADEQUATE SUPPLIES OF FOOD AND CLOTHING. AUTOMATIC WEAPONS AND MORTAR SHELLS WERE DUG OUT FROM THE EARTH.

THE VIET CONG DID NOT RESIST THE AMERICANS. THE DEAD, INJURED AND THE CAPTURED WERE LATER TAKEN AWAY BY HELICOPTERS.
