    MISS POLLOCK ALLOWED THE ONLY OTHER COMPETITOR IN THE RACE, VERA NIKOLIC, OF YUGOSLAVIA, TO LEAD UNTIL THE FINAL BEND BEFORE STRIDING AHEAD TO BEAT THE PREVIOUS BEST SET BY BRITAIN'S ANN PACKER DURING THE 1964 TOKYO OLYMPICS.

    MISS POLLOCK SPURRED ON BY THE 28,500 CROWD BEAT THE YUGOSLAV GIRL BY MORE THAN SIX YARDS (5 METRES). THE AUSTRALIAN'S PREVIOUS BEST TIME WAS 2 MINUTES 3.7 SECONDS - THE SAME TIME CLOCKED BY MISS NIKOLIC.

    ANOTHER AUSTRALIAN RECORD-BREAKING RUNNER, RON CLARKE WON THE 5,000 METRES IN A DISAPPOINTING TIME OF 13 MINUTES 45.0 SECONDS. HE HOLDS THE WORLD RECORD AT 13 MINUTES 16.6 SECONDS.

    ON THE FOLLOWING DAY (29 JUNE) CLARKE DECIDED TO RUN IN THE 1,500 METRES INSTEAD OF THE 10,000 METRES BUT DROPPED OUT OF THE EVENT 200 METRES (YARDS) FROM THE TAPE.

    THE 10,000 METRE EVENT WAS WON BY KENYA'S NAFTALI TEMU IN A NEW WORLD GAMES AND STADIUM RECORD BY JUST OVER 28 MINUTES. ON WEDNESDAY FELLOW COUNTRYMAN DANIEL RUDISHA HAD WON THE MEN'S 400 METRES IN 46.5 SECONDS.
