  • Description

A NATIONWIDE STRIKE OF 170,000 BUS AND TRAM WORKERS, PRESSING FOR PAY RISES OF UP TO 14 PER CENT, HIT ITALIANS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) IN THE MIDST OF THEIR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING.

TRAFFIC CHAOS BUILT UP IN TOWNS, AND SHOPKEEPERS REPORTED A SHARP FALL IN SALES WHEN PEOPLE STAYED AT HOME RATHER THAN FACE THE CROWDED STREETS.

THE TRADE UNIONS ANNOUNCED THEY WERE LIMITING THE STRIKE TO TODAY ONLY, INSTEAD OF LETTING IT RUN FOR 48 HOURS AS PLANNED. THEY DECIDED TO HALVE THE DURATION OF THE STRIKE AS A GESTURE OF GOODWILL AT CHRISTMAS.

ITALIANS ARE GETTING USED TO HAVING NO BUSES AND TRAMS. THIS WAS THE SEVENTH STRIKE THIS YEAR. THE AUTHORITIES RUN SKELETON SERVICES WITH ARMY LORRIES AND HIRED COACHES, AND PRIVATE DRIVERS GIVE PEDESTRIANS LIFTS, BUT TRAFFIC JAMS ALWAYS RESULT. THE MUNICIPAL TRANSPORT COMPANIES SAY THEY CANNOT AFFORD PAY RISES, SINCE THEY ARE NEARLY ALL HEAVILY IN DEBT AND RUN AT A LOSS.
