IN A MOOD OF GAIETY AND DEFIANCE, THE RHODESIAN CAPITAL OF SALISBURY YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) CELEBRATED THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE COLONY'S SEIZURE OF INDEPENDENCE FROM BRITAIN. MR. IAN SMITH, THE REBEL PRIME MINISTER, LED HIS WHITE SUPPORTERS IN CHEERING AND SINGING, WHILE IN ONE OF SALISBURY'S AFRICAN TOWNSHIPS PETROL WAS POURED OVER A BUS AND SET ALIGHT.

THE INCIDENT IN HIGHFIELDS TOWNSHIP CAME ON THE NIGHT WHEN MR. SMITH WAS ATTENDING A GALA BALL IN THE WHITE SECTOR OF THE CITY. HE TOLD HIS CHEERING AUDIENCE THAT THEY HAD CAUSE FOR PRIDE IN THE WAY RHODESIA HAD SURVIVED THE INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON HER....
THE FOLLOWING MORNING ONLY ONE CHURCH BELL IN SALISBURY RANG FOR SERVICES OF COMMEMORATION AND THANKSGIVING...THAT OF THE DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH, CLOSELY CONNECTED WITH THE AFRIKANER COMMUNITY IN SOUTH AFRICA. NO OTHER RELIGIOUS ORGANISATION MARKED THE ANNIVERSARY.

MR. SMITH WAS AT THE SERVICE, AND SO WAS A WOMAN DEMONSTRATING AGAINST THE PRESS CENSORSHIP IMPOSED BY HIS ILLEGAL GOVERNMENT. THE REBEL LEADER NEVER SAW HER....SHE WAS REMOVED, STRUGGLING, BY POLICE.
