    Background: THE BATTLE FOR DAK TO, IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS OF SOUTH VIETNAM, IS CONTINUING. MEANWHILE, GIANT CHINOOK HELICOPTERS ARE AIRLIFTING SUPPLIES TO ALLIED FORCES ENGAGED IN THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST VIET CONG TROOPS WHO ARE TRYING TO GET CONTROL OF THE AREA.

    SO FAR THIS MONTH, THE AMERICANS HAVE REPORTED LOSING 289 DEAD AND 800 WOUNDED. THEY SAID 1,143 NORTH VIETNAMESE WERE KILLED.

    DOGBONE HILL IS AT PRESENT THE MOST FORWARD POST IN THE BATTLE, NOW IN ITS THIRD WEEK. IT IS BEING OCCUPIED BY AMERICAN INFANTRYMEN, WHO MOVED IN ON NOVEMBER 13. SINCE THEN, THEY HAVE COME UNDER CONSTANT MORTAR AND ROCKET FIRE.

    THE HILL IS ABOUT SIX MILES SOUTHWEST TO DAKTO, AND CLOSE TO THE CAMBODIAN BORDER. THE VIET CONG ARE HOLDING STRATEGIC POSITIONS IN THE MOUNTAINS FROM WHICH THEY CAN ATTACK DAK TO AND OTHER KEY POSTS IN THE HIGHLAND AREA.
