  • Description

IN BELGRADE, THE YUGOSLAV CAPITAL, FLAGS HANG AT HALF MAST MOURNING THE DEAD OF THE SKOPJE EARTHQUAKE.IN THE SILENT SUNDAY STREETS PEOPLE STAND OUTSIDE THE "BORBA" NEWSPAPER BUILDING AND LEARN THE LATEST REPORTS FROM THE STRICKEN CITY.

THE DEATH-TOLL MOUNTS HOURLY BUT AS IT DOES SO THERE ARE STORIES OF PEOPLE BEING FOUND ALIVE UNDER THE RUBBLE BY RESCUE TEAMS FROM MANY COUNTRIES.ON SUNDAY AT LEAST SEVEN PEOPLE WERE RESCUED FROM THE RUBBLE ALIVE - THEY HAD BEEN BURIED FOR NEARLY SIXTY HOURS.

OFFICIALLY MORE THAN 800 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FOUND DEAD, BUT IS ESTIMATED THAT THE TOLL WILL BE GREATER, POSSIBLY MORE THAN 1,500.MORE THAN 2,000 HAVE BEEN INJURED.

MANY PEOPLE ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR THEIR RELATIVES.THE LOCAL RADIO STATION BROADCASTS SPECIAL BULLETINS SEEKING NEWS OF THE MISSING.SOME OF THE SURVIVORS HAVE MANAGED TO SAVE A FEW OF THEIR BELONGINGS, PERHAPS JUST A CHAIR, OR A BOOK.

ALL ROUND THE CLOCK RESCUE WORKERS SEARCH THE RUBBLE.ALL OVER THE TOWN FIRST-AID CENTRES MANNED BY MANY NATIONALITIES KEEP PACE WITH THE SICK AND INJURED.ALREADY SEVERAL THOUSAND HAVE BEEN VACCINATED AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY OF EPIDEMIC AMID DEATH AND THE FIERCE SUN.

ON SUNDAY A BELGIAN COUPLE, M.SERGE JACQUEMART, AND HIS WIFE SUZY, WERE RESCUED FROM THE BASEMENT OF THE HOTEL MACEDONIA.THEY HAD SPENT ABOUT 55 HOURS TRAPPED UNDER THE RUBBLE.A SOLDIER HAD SAID HE HEARD VOICES CALLING FOR HELP.THE RESCUE TEAM MADE A SMALL OPENING IN THE WALL AND A VOICE IN FRENCH, ASKED FOR WATER.THE RESCUERS HANDED IN WATER AND PUMPED AIR INTO THE SPACE WHERE THEY ERE TRAPPED.MME.JACQUEMART WAS LIFTED OUT, SMILING, APPARENTLY UNHURT.THEN SHE FAINTED.IT WAS A FURTHER TWO HOURS BEFORE HER HUSBAND COULD BE RESCUED.HE WAS BROUGHT OUT ALIVE AND MANAGED TO SAY A FEW WORDS TO REPORTERS BEFORE BEING RUSHED TO ONE OF THE MANY MAKESHIFT HOSPITALS.

AT THE AIRPORT THE SICK ARE BEING MOVED OUT.SO FAR 162 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FLOWN TO BELGRADE, THEY ARE THE MOST SERIOUSLY INJURED.THE PEOPLE, SHOWN ON OUR FILM, WERE LARGELY SUFFERING FROM HEART TROUBLE, ALTHOUGH NEEDING HOSPITAL TREATMENT, THEY WERE WELL ENOUGH TO BE MOVED OUT BY YUGOSLAV MILITARY PLANES TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS.

WHILE OUR CAMERAMAN WAS AT THE AIRPORT TWO DANISH PLANES ARRIVED WITH SUPPLIES FOR THE INJURED.THEY HAD BROUGHT A LARGE NUMBER OF BLANKETS.AMONG THE INTERNATIONAL AID, BRITAIN IS OFFERING GBP10,000 AND PROMISES MORE LATER.

TONIGHT (MONDAY) CAME NEWS OF THE RESCUE OF 20 MORE PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN TRAPPED FOR NEARLY 80 HOURS IN SKOPJE'S RAILWAY TUNNEL.SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE MAY STILL BE IN THE TUNNEL WHERE AN EXPRESS TRAIN IS TRAPPED.THE AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THAT THERE CAN BE LITTLE HOPE OF FINDING PEOPLE ALIVE IF NOT DUG OUT WITHIN THE NEXT FEW HOURS IN THE TOWN ITSELF.

THEY ALSO SAY THE QUESTION IS NOW WHETHER THE TOWN SHOULD BE REBUILT ON A NEW AND SAFER SITE.ONLY ONE HOME IN TEN IS STILL HABITABLE.MANY HOUSES NEED ONLY ANOTHER PUSH TO SEND THEM TUMBLING INTO THE STREET.ABOUT 100,000 SURVIVORS - HALF THE POPULATION - HAVE LEFT THE TOWN AND FOUND TEMPORARY HOMES IN THE SUBURBS OR COUNTRY SIDE.

TODAY, THERE WERE REPORTS OF NEW EARTHQUAKES - THIS TIME IN PERSIA - IT HAS SHAKEN A VILLAGE NEAR THE PERSIAN GULF.MANY HOUSES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BUT BECAUSE THE VILLAGE IS SMALL, CASUALTIES ARE NOT LIKELY TO BE HEAVY.
