  • Description

THE 14,000-TON "HAWAIIAN PLANTER" -- THE FIRST CONTAINER SHIP ON THE JAPAN-UNITED STATES RUN ARRIVED AT TOKYO FROM KOBE YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) ON HER MAIDEN JOURNEY.

A FLEET OF FIRE-FIGHTING BARGES OF THE TOKYO METROPOLITAN WATER POLICE GREETED THE SHIP AS SHE PULLED ALONGSIDE THE SHINAGWA PIER AT TOKYO PORT.

THE SHIP LOADED PART OF ITS CONTAINERISED CARGO, INCLUDING HOME ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES AND CERAMICS, IN KOBE PORT ON MONDAY. SHE WILL LOAD MORE IN TOKYO BEFORE LEAVING FOR SAN FRANCISCO.

THE HAWAIIAN PLANTER IS SCHEDULED TO RETURN TO JAPAN IN MID-OCTOBER ON HER SECOND TRANS-PACIFIC CRUISE.

THE OWNERS PLAN A TWICE MONTHLY CONTAINERISED LINER SERVICE BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE U.S., STARTING IN OCTOBER WITH THE HAWAIIAN PLANTER AND HER SISTER SHIP, THE HAWAIIAN CRAFT. THE HAWAIIAN PLANTER CARRIES UP TO 464 STANDARDISED CONTAINERS.

WITH THE MAIDEN VOYAGE, SHE OPENS UP A NEW ERA IN PACIFIC OCEAN MARITIME TRANSPORTATION, AND IS EXPECTED TO TAKE ROUGHLY 70 PER CENT OF CARGO MOVEMENT BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE U.S.
