    SEVENTY-FOUR OF THE WORLD'S LEADING SKI JUMPERS COMPETED AT BISCHOFSHOFEN NEAR SALZBURG IN AUSTRIA, JAN 6 - THE FINAL MEETING IN THE ANNUAL AUSTRIAN-GERMAN SKI JUMPING TOUR.

    THE THREE PREVIOUS MEETINGS - AT OBERSTDORF, INNSBRUCK AND GARMISCH - STILL LEFT THE FINAL RESULT IN DOUBT AND COMPETITION WAS KEEN AS THE JUMPERS FROM 14 COUNTRIES SET OUT ON THIS THE FINAL ROUND.

    EACH COMPETITOR HAD TWO JUMPS, OFTEN TRAVELLING AT OVER 50 MILES AN HOUR AS THEY HURTLED DOWN THE RAMP AND INTO THE AIR TO LAND SOME 250 FEET DOWN THE RUN.POINTS WERE AWARDED FOR THEIR STANCE IN THE AIR AS WELL AS THEY WAY THEY LANDED AND THE DISTANCE COVERED IN THE JUMP.

    WINNER OF THE DAY WAS AUSTRIAN WILLI EGGER WHO SOARED 300 FEET IN HIS FIRST JUMP AND 303 IN HIS SECOND.EGGER WAS SECOND IN THE OVERALL TITLE AND MANY CONSIDERED HE WOULD HAVE WON BUT FOR A FALL SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE AT OBERSTDORF.

    OUTRIGHT WINNER OF THE WHOLE TOUR WAS 28 YEAR OLD FINNISH PAINTER, EINO KIRJONER WHO - ALTHOUGH HE COULD ONLY MAKE 11TH PLACE AT THIS MEETING - HAD ALREADY BUILT UP AN IMPRESSIVE LIST OF POINTS ON THE PREVIOUS THREE DAYS.GERMAN OLYMPIC CHAMPION HELMUT RECKNAGEL WAS THIRD IN THE TOTAL POINTS SCORE.THIRD PLACE GETTER AT THE BISCHOFSHOFEN MEETING WAS WOLFGANG HAPPLE FROM THE BLACK FOREST, GERMANY.
