  • Description

THIS MORNING (FRIDAY) THE FIRST OF THE RAF PLANES FLEW INTO ZAMBIA UNDER THE AGREEMENT MADE BETWEEN PRESIDENT KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA AND THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT YESTERDAY.

THE RAF PLANES CROSSED INTO ZAMBIA IN ANSWER TO PRESIDENT KAUNDA'S CALL FOR PROTECTION ESPECIALLY IN THE AREA OF THE KARIBA HYDROELECTRIC COMPLEX. DISCUSSIONS ARE STILL TAKING PLACE BETWEEN PRESIDENT KAUNDA AND MR. BOTTOMLEY, THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS SECRETARY, ON THE POSSIBILITY OF GROUND FORCES FOR ZAMBIA. BOTH RAF TRANSPORT PLANES AND JAVELIN JET FIGHTERS HAVE BEEN SENT TO ZAMBIA.

AS THE RAF PLANES WERE ARRIVING AT NDOLA AIRPORT, AN AMERICAN HERCULES C-130 TRANSPORT PLANE WAS TESTING THE FEASIBILITY OF AIRLIFTING COPPER FROM ZAMBIA TO THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, IN A BID TO FIND AN ALTERNATIVE OUTLET TO THE CURRENT RAIL LINKS THROUGH RHODESIA AND PORTUGUESE WEST AFRICA.

THE C-130 FLEW OUT OF NDOLA WITH ABOUT 25 TONS OF COPPER AND LATER RETURNED WITH A LOAD OF DIESEL FUEL AND CEMENT FOR A ZAMBIAN MINING COMPANY. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THE COST OF AIRLIFTING THE COPPER WILL COMPARE VERY FAVOURABLY WITH THE PRESENT RAIL-FREIGHT COSTS.
