  • Description

Former Cambodian Head of State Prince WP Sihanouk arrived at Brazzaville in the People's Republic of the Congo on Saturday (19 May) on the fourth leg of his tour of nine African and East European countries.

The Prince was greeted at the airport by Congolese President Marien Ngouabi. Later he was cheered by thousands as he drove through the streets of Brazzaville.

In his speech of welcome President Ngouabi told the Prince that the "peoples of Cambodia and the Congo have much in common." Both have had to struggle to free themselves from colonial rule, he said, and added that the Congo recognised only Prince Sihanouk as the legal head of Cambodia, and he claimed that forces supporting the Prince were now in control of three fifths of the country.

The President denounced both the Lon Nol ???egime and the Americans, who, he said, was supporting them. He ended by assuring the Prince that the Americans would lose in Cambodia as they had lost in Vietnam, and that Prince Sihanouk and the people of Cambodia would always have the support and friendship of the Congolese people.

Speaking to reporters at the airport the Prince expressed satisfaction at the welcome accorded him by the Congolese people and said "We are companions in arms, our friendship is inseparable."
Prince Sihanouk arrived in the Congo having previously visited Senegal, Guinea and Mali. He has said that the purpose of his tour was to thank those countries who supported what he termed "the just liberation struggle" of the Cambodian people.
