  • Description

A THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE NOW FEARED TO HAVE DIED IN THE WAKE OF THE WORST CYCLONE TO HIT INDIA IN MORE THAN 20 YEARS. STORMS LASHED SOUTHERN INDIA FROM THE SOUTHERN STATE OF ANDRAH TO THE BAY OF BENGAL AND OFFICIALS ARE STILL COUNTING THE DEAD.

THE DEATH TOLL IS ALREADY PUT AT WELL OVER 6-HUNDRED, BUT OFFICIALS SAY THAT THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO GET SOME RESCUE PARTIES THROUGH TO THE WORST HIT AREAS. IN ONE VILLAGE ALONE, ALMOST 2-HUNDRED PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE DIED AND MORE THAN 1-HUNDRED ARE STILL MISSING.

BEFORE THEY DIED DOWN ON WEDNESDAY (21 MAY) THE FLOODS HAD LEFT DEVASTATED THREE LARGE CENTRAL DISTRICTS WHICH INCLUDED SOME OF THE BEST RICE-PRODUCING AREAS IN INDIA.

ARMY UNITS ARE NOW TRYING TO GET THROUGH TO MAROONED VILLAGERS, FOR MANY OF WHOM THE ONLY SOURCE OF FOOD HAS BEEN AIR-DROPS OVER THE PAST WEEK.
