    Background: THE FIRST EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ARTS TO EMBRACE A CROSS-SECTION OF THE AFRICAN CONTINENT HAS OPENED AT LONDON'S AFRICA CENTRE FOR THE WHOLE OF AUGUST. THE EXHIBITION IS A JOINT VENTURE BY THE AFRICA CENTRE -- A PRIVATELY SPONSORED CULTURAL AND SOCIAL ORGANISATION --- AND YOUNG ARTISTS AND ART STUDENTS WHO CAME TO BRITAIN FROM A DOZEN AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

    THE EXHIBITS REPRESENTS MALAGASY, THE IVORY COAST, CONGO-KINSHASA, ETHIOPIA, LIBYA, NIGERIA, GHANA, LIBERIA, MALAWI, SIERRA LEONE, SUDAN, AND UGANDA. ALTHOUGH MOST OF THE 120 EXHIBITS ARE PAINTINGS, SCULPTURE, GRAPHICS, ARCHITECTURE, STAGE DESIGNS, TEXTILES, CEREMACIS AND PHOTOGRAPHY ARE ALSO INCLUDED.

    ONE OF THE AIMS OF THE AFRICA CENTRE IS TO FOSTER BETTER COMMUNICATION BETWEEN ENGLISH AND FRENCH SPEAKING AFRICANS.
