    ADCOCKS, WHO FINISHED FIFTH IN THE MEXICO OLYMPIC MARATHON IN OCTOBER, EASILY SURPASSED HIS BEST MARATHON TIME THIS YEAR OF TWO HOURS 12 MINUTES 16.8 SECONDS.

    SECOND WAS YOSHIAKI UNETANI OF JAPAN (TWO HOURS 12 MINUTES 40.6 SECONDS) AND THIRD WAS TADAAKI OEOKA, ALSO OF JAPAN (TWO HOURS 13 MINUTES 37.6 SECONDS). ISMAIL AKCAY OF TURKEY FINISHED FOURTH - HE HAD ALSO COME FOURTH IN THE MEXICO EVENT.

    ADCOCKS TOLD REPORTERS LATER THAT HIS LEGS BECAME TIRED AFTER PASSING THE 35 KILOMETRE POINT. HE SAID: "I WAS FAST TO START AND STAYED IN THE FIRST GROUP UNTIL THE HALF WAY. THEN I STEPPED UP THE PACE."
    HE LED THE FIELD OF 62 RUNNERS - ??? - AT THE 25 KILOMETRE POINT AND STAYED IN FRONT FOR THE REST OF THE RACE. THE 42.2 KILOMETRE (26 MILES 835 YARDS) RACE ON THE FLAT COURSE ALONG HAKATA BAY IN NORTHERN KYUSHU, JAPAN'S MAIN SOUTHERNMOST ISLAND, WAS WATCHED BY 50,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING PRINCESS CHICHIBU, SISTER-IN-LAW OF EMPEROR HIROCHITO.
