  • Description

A party of experts from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, led by Secretary-General Dr. Joseph Luns, inspected Canadian installations in West Germany on Friday (17 January). The NATO officials saw Canada's land and air operations in action at the Lahr and Baden-Soellingen bases in the Black Forest.

Canada's European NATO force numbers about 5000 military personnel, with another 1600 civilians. They man four mechanised brigades and an air group. The air group is equipped with CF-104 aircraft and Kiowa helicopters. The 2800-man brigade group operates with Centurion tanks, self-propelled 155mm howitzers and armoured personnel carriers.

Several improvements have recently been made at the Canadian bases and, in addition, plans are underway to acquire Blowpipe surface-to-air defensive missiles.

The Canadian forces value their tours of duty in Europe as it gives them the opportunity to train with other Allied troops.
