  • Description

IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN STAYED AWAY FROM PUBLIC SCHOOL CLASSES YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) IN PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED "DE FACTO SEGREGATION" IN THE CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM.

A STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE BOYCOTT LEADERS DURING THE AFTERNOON SAID THAT ABUT 80 PER CENT OF THE ENROLMENT OF 38 SCHOOLS HAD STAYED HOME. THIS AMOUNTS TO SOME 31,000 CHILDREN, FAR FEWER THAN THE 256,000 CHILDREN WHO BOYCOTTED THE CITY'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS LAST OCTOBER.

THE BOYCOTT WAS CALLED BY CIVIL RIGHTS GROUPS TO PROTEST ALLEGED SEGREGATION IN THE CITY'S SCHOOLS. PUBLIC SCHOOLS USUALLY SERVE THEIR IMMEDIATE NEIGHBOURHOODS; IF THE LOCAL NEIGHBOURHOOD HAS A LARGELY NEGRO POPULATION, THE SCHOOL ENROLMENT WILL ALSO BE LARGELY NEGRO. NEGRO LEADERS CHARGE THAT THIS IS DETRIMENTAL TO EDUCATION.

TUESDAY'S BOYCOTT WAS OPPOSED BY CHICAGO'S MAYOR AND BY NEGRO LEADERS IN THE CITY. NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED.

THROUGHOUT SCHOOL-HOURS DEMONSTRATORS PICKETED THE BOYCOTTED SCHOOLS, CARRYING SIGNS DEMANDING AN END TO DE FACTO SEGREGATION.
