  • Description

ONE OF THE EIGHT ROMAN CATHOLIC NUNS EXPELLED FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA COLLAPSED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WHILE CROSSING THE CHINESE BORDER INTO HONG KONG AND DIED LATER IN HOSPITAL. SHE WAS 85-YEAR-OLD SISTER EAMONN (MARY O'SULLIVAN) FROM CORK, EIRE.

THE EIGHT NUNS WERE ALL FROM THE FRANCISCAN SISTERS' CONVENT IN PEKING, WHICH WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE YOUNG RED GUARDS LAST WEEK. THE NUNS SAID THAT THROUGHOUT THEIR THREE-DAY TRAIN JOURNEY FROM PEKING TO CANTON, RED GUARDS JEERED AT THEM AND GAVE THEM AN ABUSIVE SEND-OFF INTO HONG KONG. THEY STRESSED THAT THEY HAD NOT BEEN PHYSICALLY MISTREATED, BUT THEY SAID HAD NOT SLEPT FOR EIGHT DAYS.

CHINA ACCUSED THE NUNS OF HAVING BEEN INVOLVED IN ESPIONAGE AND SAID THEY WERE EXPELLED TO SAFEGUARD THE COUNTRY'S SECURITY AND THE INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE.

SISTER EAMONN WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL IN KOWLOON SOON AFTER SHE ARRIVED ON THE HONG KONG SIDE OF THE BORDER. DOCTORS SAID SHE WAS SUFFERING FROM GENERAL FATIGUE. BUT HER CONDITION WORSENED UNEXPECTEDLY DURING THE NIGHT. THE SEVEN OTHER NUNS WERE AT HER BEDSIDE WHEN SHE DIED PEACEFULLY.
